School Overview

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy has a student body of 1,000. It is considered to be a prestigious academy that trains officers in various military branches, in the transportation industry and in the Merchant Marine.

The military school is also known as Kings Point or USMMA. It is a national institution operating under the Federal Government’s Maritime Administration. It has an accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy students are called midshipmen. They are trained in marine engineering, navigation, maritime law, international law, ship administration, customs personnel management among other courses required for professional ship management.

This military school has a 4 year program focused on training the students as reserved commissioned officers and merchant marine officer licensing in the US Armed Forces. To prepare students for their careers, dedication, leadership and discipline are developed.

What to Expect

To be admitted in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, students must be qualified scholastically and they should have met the minimum requirements in GPA and SAT/ACT. The students must also be of good moral standards. Applicants must also be between the ages of 17 and 25. Like most military schools, getting in this school is not easy but the benefits are unlimited after joining and graduating.
