SUNY Maritime College is the largest maritime college in the US. It was founded back in 1874 and makes the list of the oldest colleges that have been federally approved for the maritime instruction. The military school makes part of the State University of NY system. Its campus is located in Fort Schuyler, Bronx. The college has an accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. All its engineering programs are ABET accredited.
The goal of SUNY Maritime College is to prepare graduates for the maritime careers. It makes the list of 100 engineering programs in the country for its excellence in marine, electrical, mechanical and facilities engineering programs. It is also a leader in the Naval Architecture. The school awards degrees in Maritime studies and Marine Environmental Science. The business degrees awarded in the military school are more focused on the maritime activities. Small Vessel Operation and Marine Technology associate degrees are also offered.
What to Expect
The Summer Sea Term takes students from the Regiment of Cadets on the Empire State VI to sea for 60 days. Students get the opportunity of visiting up to five foreign ports as well as one domestic port every summer. 60% of the student body is enrolled in the Regiment of Cadets program. During admission to the military school, only students with average 3.0 grade points or higher are accepted.
