The Great Lakes Maritime Academy is the only freshwater maritime academy in the US. It is also one of the 6 maritime academies in the United States. The education is dual purpose and cadets receive dynamic education. The students spend some time at sea and other time in traditional college classes. Some classes are also taken in the Ferris State University to study business administration. The reason for this is to ensure the students receive a broad education.
There are 4 degree programs available:
• Deck Officer • Engineer Officer • Power Plant Facilities Operator
To apply to this military school, you have to fill a comprehensive application form available on the school’s website. The tuition depends on the program taken. Qualifying students are eligible for financial aid.
What to Expect
The Great Lakes Maritime Academy operates as a coed military school. All cadets must live on campus for 2 semesters in their first year; that is if they are under 20 years. Three semesters are usually spent at sea. This school is more business oriented than it is military oriented. There are no Naval or Coast Guard Reserve Officers Training Corps programs.
