II.            Join the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Once again students in college receive scholarship money from the training program in order to finish their degree course work and in exchange they commit to serve in the military for a set period of time.

III.            Join the Officer Candidate School (OCS) or Officer training School (OTS), for the Air Force, after graduating from a civilian college. Since career skills have already been covered in college, the OCS/OTC programs concentrate on military subjects, physical training and leadership skills.

IV.            Direct Commission. This is where individual with special skills are commissioned as officers. These are people with degrees in medicine, law, engineering, intelligence etc.

The movie “Full Metal Jacket” is a story about a group of young men in training for the Vietnam War. The recruit is assigned a service number and a unit. The importance of the unit is always above that of the individual. Tasks that may seem unpalatable like cleaning the latrines have to be done and when it is one’s turn there is no escape. What may be seen as overtime in the civilian duties does not get paid and the living conditions are basic and the food not gourmet.

The recruit’s attitude and discipline take a beating and are remolded into military attitude where loyalty, sacrifice, obedience and sacrifice are emphasized.
