The California Maritime Academy was established back in 1930. At the time, it was known as the California Nautical School. It was initially a male only school until the 1970s when it opened doors for females. In 1996, the military school was integrated with the California State University system.
The California Maritime Academy is nicknamed the Cal Maritime. It is located approximately 30 miles north of San Francisco. The school offers a range of baccalaureate programs like marine transportation and marine engineering. It is accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges. It also maintains more program related accreditations by the Engineering Accreditation Commission, the Engineering Technology Association Commission as well as the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education.
What to Expect
In addition to the 4 year degree programs, the California Maritime Academy also offer masters programs. The school also has an online learning option for both the undergraduate and post-graduate students. Military students have numerous options but it is not a requirement to join the U.S. Coast Guard or any other military branch after graduation. However, students interested in military service can get numerous financial aids. If you have always wanted to work on the water without the risk of being on a freighter, then this is the military school to enroll in for a degree.
